India’s Top Automakers Defend E20 Fuel Amid Growing Public Concerns

India’s leading automobile manufacturers and government representatives held a rare joint press conference to address growing public discussions surrounding E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. The interaction came as questions about fuel efficiency, engine compatibility and long-term vehicle performance gained attention across social media and public forums.

The press conference brought together senior officials from major automobile manufacturers, including Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp and Toyota Kirloskar Motor, along with government representatives. During the briefing, the industry shared its experience from vehicle testing, service records and engineering evaluations related to E20 fuel.

The discussion follows increased public interest after comments made during a recent court hearing led to widespread debate over the implementation of the E20 programme. The Attorney General later clarified that his remarks referred to ethanol supply volumes and not to the E20 fuel policy itself.

Industry representatives stated that manufacturers have carried out extensive testing of E20 fuel in petrol vehicles and have also monitored vehicles through their service networks. According to Maruti Suzuki, the company has serviced more than 1.5 crore vehicles that were not originally certified for E20 over the past two years and reported no widespread fuel-related mechanical issues linked specifically to the ethanol blend.

Officials also acknowledged that E20 petrol has a slightly lower energy content than conventional petrol, which may result in a modest reduction in fuel efficiency. At the same time, they noted that ethanol offers a higher octane rating, a characteristic that can support the development of future engines designed to operate more efficiently with higher ethanol blends.

During the briefing, industry representatives addressed several claims circulating online regarding engine failures allegedly caused by E20 fuel. They stated that at least one widely shared case was found to be related to contaminated fuel rather than the ethanol blend itself. They also clarified that E20 is currently the highest ethanol blend approved for regular petrol vehicles under existing testing standards, and any move towards higher blends would require fresh validation and certification.

India has been progressively increasing ethanol blending in petrol as part of its broader energy strategy aimed at reducing crude oil imports, improving energy security and supporting domestic ethanol production. The E20 programme forms an important part of this policy, with compatible fuel now being supplied across the country.

ವಾಹನ ತಯಾರಕರು ಇ20 ಇಂಧನದ ಕುರಿತು ವ್ಯಾಪಕ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ಹಾಗೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಸೇವಾ ಜಾಲದ ಮೂಲಕ ವಾಹನಗಳ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ಷಮತೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು. ಮಾರುತಿ ಸುಜುಕಿ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಕಳೆದ ಎರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಲತಃ ಇ20ಗೆ ಪ್ರಮಾಣೀಕರಿಸದ 1.5 ಕೋಟಿಗೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ವಾಹನಗಳಿಗೆ ಸೇವೆ ಒದಗಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಎಥನಾಲ್ ಮಿಶ್ರಿತ ಇಂಧನದಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾದ ವ್ಯಾಪಕ ಯಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳ ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಾಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಂಡುಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
