India’s First Mass-Market Flex-Fuel Car: MS WagonR

India’s push towards cleaner and more sustainable mobility has taken another important step with the launch of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel. Priced at ₹7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), the new model becomes the country’s first mass-market passenger vehicle capable of running on high ethanol blends, including E85 fuel.

What Is a Flex-Fuel Vehicle?

A flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) is designed to operate on petrol, ethanol, or a combination of both. The Wagon R Flex Fuel can use fuel blends ranging from E20 to E85, allowing it to run on fuel containing up to 85% ethanol.

Ethanol is a renewable fuel produced primarily from sugarcane, corn, and other agricultural sources. Compared to conventional petrol, ethanol can help reduce carbon emissions and improve energy security by decreasing dependence on imported crude oil.

Price and Variant

Maruti Suzuki has launched the Wagon R Flex Fuel in a single fully-loaded ZXi+ manual variant.

The Flex Fuel version commands a premium of approximately ₹86,000 over the equivalent petrol variant.

Engine and Technical Changes

Powering the Wagon R Flex Fuel is Maruti Suzuki’s familiar 1.2-litre K12N four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. According to the company, power and torque outputs remain similar to the regular petrol version despite the extensive modifications required for ethanol compatibility.

To safely operate on higher ethanol blends, Maruti Suzuki has made several engineering changes, including:

• Upgraded fuel injectors

• Revised fuel pump

• Ethanol-resistant fuel lines

• Recalibrated engine control unit (ECU)

• Ethanol content sensor

These modifications allow the engine to automatically adapt to different ethanol concentrations.

Design Changes

Visually, the Wagon R Flex Fuel remains almost identical to the standard Wagon R. However, Maruti Suzuki has added a few unique touches such as “Flex Fuel” decals, Badging & Minor cosmetic updates to distinguish the model.

Features

Since the Flex Fuel model is based on the top-spec ZXi+ trim, it comes equipped with the same feature set available in the standard variant.

The Big Question: Will It Save Money?

Industry studies and previous E85 testing have shown that vehicles running on high ethanol blends can experience a noticeable drop in fuel efficiency compared to regular petrol. The actual savings will therefore depend on:
