India Gets Its First Homegrown Premium Automotive Coated Steel

India’s automotive manufacturing sector has received a major boost with the launch of Zagnelis Protect, a premium automotive coated steel developed and produced domestically by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India, a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. It is the first zinc-aluminium-magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg) coated automotive steel to be manufactured in India, reducing dependence on imported corrosion-resistant steel grades.

Unlike conventional galvanized steel that relies solely on a zinc coating, Zagnelis Protect uses a multi-element metallic coating comprising zinc, aluminium and magnesium. This coating forms a stable protective layer that significantly improves corrosion resistance, especially at cut edges, stamped sections and welded joints where rust typically initiates. The coating also provides a self-healing effect by forming protective compounds over exposed areas.

The steel offers superior formability, spot-weldability and paint adhesion, making it suitable for high-volume automotive production. It can help manufacturers reduce coating thickness while maintaining durability, potentially lowering component weight and lifecycle maintenance costs.

Initial applications include motor cups used in power windows, mirrors, wipers and seat-adjustment systems. The material is also suitable for structural and semi-structural components such as chassis parts, door inner panels, bonnet reinforcements and tailgate structures where long-term corrosion protection is critical.

The launch is significant because India still imports an estimated 8–10% of advanced automotive steel grades due to specialized coating and metallurgical requirements. Domestic production is expected to improve supply security, reduce lead times and support the localisation of high-value automotive components.

Zagnelis Protect becomes the third patented ArcelorMittal steel technology manufactured in India after Magnelis and Optigal. The product also supports automakers’ efforts to improve vehicle durability, meet longer corrosion warranty requirements and enhance overall quality while advancing India’s automotive manufacturing capabilities.

ಭಾರತದ ವಾಹನ ತಯಾರಿಕಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಉತ್ತೇಜನ ದೊರೆತಿದ್ದು, ಜಾಗ್ನೆಲಿಸ್ ಪ್ರೊಟೆಕ್ಟ್ (Zagnelis Protect) ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರೀಮಿಯಂ ಆಟೋಮೋಟಿವ್ ಕೋಟೆಡ್ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ಅನ್ನು ಆರ್ಸೆಲರ್‌ಮಿತ್ತಲ್ ನಿಪ್ಪಾನ್ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ (AM/NS) ಇಂಡಿಯಾ ದೇಶೀಯವಾಗಿ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಪಡಿಸಿ ಉತ್ಪಾದಿಸಿದೆ. ಆರ್ಸೆಲರ್‌ಮಿತ್ತಲ್ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಪ್ಪಾನ್ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ಎಂಬ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಉಕ್ಕು ದೈತ್ಯಗಳ ಜಂಟಿ ಉದ್ಯಮವಾಗಿರುವ AM/NS ಇಂಡಿಯಾ, ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಜಿಂಕ್-ಅಲ್ಯೂಮಿನಿಯಂ-ಮ್ಯಾಗ್ನೀಷಿಯಂ (Zn-Al-Mg) ಲೇಪಿತ ಆಟೋಮೋಟಿವ್ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ಅನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಿದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ತುಕ್ಕು ನಿರೋಧಕ ಉನ್ನತ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟದ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್‌ಗಳ ಆಮದು ಅವಲಂಬನೆ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಲಿದೆ.

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಗ್ಯಾಲ್ವನೈಸ್‌ಡ್ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ಕೇವಲ ಜಿಂಕ್ ಲೇಪನವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದರೆ, ಜಾಗ್ನೆಲಿಸ್ ಪ್ರೊಟೆಕ್ಟ್ ಜಿಂಕ್, ಅಲ್ಯೂಮಿನಿಯಂ ಮತ್ತು ಮ್ಯಾಗ್ನೀಷಿಯಂ ಒಳಗೊಂಡ ಬಹು-ಲೋಹೀಯ ಲೇಪನವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ವಿಶೇಷ ಲೇಪನವು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿದ ಅಂಚುಗಳು, ಸ್ಟ್ಯಾಂಪಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡಿದ ಭಾಗಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವೆಲ್ಡಿಂಗ್ ಜಂಟಿಗಳಂತಹ ತುಕ್ಕು ಆರಂಭವಾಗುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ, ಹಾನಿಗೊಳಗಾದ ಭಾಗಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ರಕ್ಷಣಾತ್ಮಕ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ‘ಸ್ವಯಂ-ಚೇತರಿಕೆ’ (Self-Healing) ಗುಣವನ್ನೂ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.

ಈ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ಉತ್ತಮ ಫಾರ್ಮಬಿಲಿಟಿ, ಸ್ಪಾಟ್-ವೆಲ್ಡಬಿಲಿಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪೇಂಟ್ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು, ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ವಾಹನ ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಡಿಮೆ ಲೇಪನ ದಪ್ಪದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಾಳಿಕೆ ಒದಗಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ವಾಹನ ಭಾಗಗಳ ತೂಕ ಮತ್ತು ನಿರ್ವಹಣಾ ವೆಚ್ಚವನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಹ ನೆರವಾಗಬಹುದು.

ಪ್ರಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಪವರ್ ವಿಂಡೋ, ಮಿರರ್, ವೈಪರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸೀಟ್ ಅಡ್ಜಸ್ಟ್‌ಮೆಂಟ್ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸುವ ಮೋಟರ್ ಕಪ್‌ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಚಾಸಿಸ್ ಭಾಗಗಳು, ಡೋರ್ ಇನರ್ ಪ್ಯಾನಲ್‌ಗಳು, ಬಾನೆಟ್ ರೀಇನ್‌ಫೋರ್ಸ್‌ಮೆಂಟ್‌ಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಟೇಲ್‌ಗೇಟ್ ರಚನೆಗಳಂತಹ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ವಾಹನ ಭಾಗಗಳಿಗೂ ಇದು ಸೂಕ್ತವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಸುಮಾರು 8–10% ಉನ್ನತ ಆಟೋಮೋಟಿವ್ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ಗ್ರೇಡ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಶೇಷ ಲೋಹಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಲೇಪನ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಅಗತ್ಯದಿಂದ ಆಮದು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಈ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನದ ದೇಶೀಯ ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆಯಿಂದ ಪೂರೈಕೆ ಭದ್ರತೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚುವುದು, ವಿತರಣಾ ಸಮಯ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗುವುದು ಹಾಗೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮೌಲ್ಯದ ವಾಹನ ಭಾಗಗಳ ಸ್ಥಳೀಕರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತೇಜನ ದೊರೆಯಲಿದೆ.

ಮ್ಯಾಗ್ನೆಲಿಸ್ (Magnelis) ಮತ್ತು ಆಪ್ಟಿಗಲ್ (Optigal) ಬಳಿಕ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಆರ್ಸೆಲರ್‌ಮಿತ್ತಲ್‌ನ ಮೂರನೇ ಪೇಟೆಂಟ್ ಪಡೆದ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಇದಾಗಿದೆ. ವಾಹನಗಳ ಬಾಳಿಕೆ, ತುಕ್ಕು ವಿರೋಧಿ ವಾರಂಟಿ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಲು ಈ ಹೊಸ ಸ್ಟೀಲ್ ಸಹಕಾರಿಯಾಗಲಿದ್ದು, ಭಾರತದ ಆಟೋಮೋಟಿವ್ ಉತ್ಪಾದನಾ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಬಲಪಡಿಸಲಿದೆ.
