India’s passenger vehicle market remained strong during the first half of 2026, with Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai and Mahindra continuing to dominate the sales charts. While SUVs remained the preferred choice for most buyers, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire proved that there is still strong demand for practical, fuel-efficient sedans by emerging as the country’s best-selling car between January and June 2026.

Maruti Suzuki maintained its commanding position by placing nine models among the top 15 best-selling cars. The company’s diverse portfolio including hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, MPVs and vans helped it retain leadership across multiple segments. Tata Motors followed with the Punch and Nexon securing second and third positions, highlighting the growing popularity of compact SUVs.

The Hyundai Creta continued to lead the midsize SUV segment despite rising competition, while the Mahindra Scorpio and Thar remained among India’s most popular rugged SUVs. Family-oriented models such as the Ertiga and WagonR also crossed the one lakh sales milestone during the six-month period, underlining sustained demand for practical and affordable vehicles.

The H1 2026 results reaffirm that Indian buyers continue to favour SUVs and practical family vehicles. However, the Dzire’s leadership demonstrates that well-priced, fuel-efficient sedans still have a significant place in the market. With several new launches expected during the second half of the year, competition across every segment is likely to become even more intense.
