Michelin Launches Made-in-India Primacy 5 Tyre for Passenger Cars

Michelin has launched the Primacy 5, its first passenger car tyre manufactured in India, marking a significant milestone in the company’s localisation strategy. Produced at Michelin’s Chennai manufacturing facility, the new tyre has been developed specifically for Indian road conditions and is aimed at the premium passenger vehicle segment. The launch strengthens Michelin’s presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets while improving product availability and reducing dependence on imports.

The Primacy 5 is designed for premium hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs, and is compatible with both conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs). Michelin says the tyre delivers enhanced ride comfort, lower road noise, longer tread life and improved wet-weather braking performance. With EV adoption increasing rapidly in India, the tyre has also been engineered to handle the higher torque and additional weight associated with electric vehicles without compromising durability or efficiency.

Manufacturing the Primacy 5 locally allows Michelin to respond more quickly to customer demand while strengthening its supply chain within India. The Chennai facility will also produce additional premium tyre ranges, including the Pilot Sport and LTX series, as part of the company’s broader expansion strategy. Local production is expected to improve availability across dealerships and make Michelin’s premium offerings more competitive in the Indian market.

The launch comes at a time when demand for premium tyres is growing steadily due to rising SUV sales, increasing ownership of premium vehicles and greater consumer awareness of vehicle safety. As buyers increasingly prioritise braking performance, ride quality and tyre longevity, manufacturers are investing in advanced tyre technologies that enhance both safety and driving comfort.
